Being an innovator is always an uphill battle, even when the newly developed product is a total game changer. Bike Magazine recently touted the Hayes Mag disc brake as the brake that changed everything. Prior to the Hayes Mag debut in 1997, nobody had disc brakes. Downhill riders didn’t know they needed them, and actively disliked them when they were introduced.
A product that was well before its time, the Hayes Mag got a lot of pushback for being too heavy and simply too powerful. The guys at Hayes knew better though; they spent years making disc brakes for trucks, tractors, motorcycles and anything else with wheels – they knew once the resistance settled, the Hayes Mag would revolutionize the mountain biking industry. And that it did.
